Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Vicky Cristina Barcelona is a 2008 film by Academy Award-winning writer-director Woody Allen.
The title was announced by The Hollywood Reporter on October 19, 2007. This is Allen's fourth film in a row shot outside the United States and his first shot in Spain. The film was shot in Avilés, Barcelona and Oviedo.
The plot centers around two American women, Vicky and Cristina, vacationing in Barcelona. There, the women meet an artist, and the three quickly develop a relationship. The artist, however, is still enamored of his mentally unstable ex-wife.
In 2007, controversy arose in Catalonia because the film was funded with public money: Barcelona's city hall provided one million euros and the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan Autonomous Government) half a million — 10 percent of the film's budget.
The film premiered at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival in May 2008 and held its world premiere in Los Angeles on August 4, 2008.

Reception:
Following the poorly received Cassandra's Dream and Scoop, received the best reviews Allen has received for some time. Scott Tobias wrote in the Onion AV club that it was "a witty and ambiguous movie that's simultaneously intoxicating and suffused with sadness and doubt". Richard Roeper suggested that Cruz should receive an Academy Award nomination for her role. Although James Berardinelli writing for ReelViews was more equivocal saying that "[Allen] has slipped back into the sinkhole of mediocrity", Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle praised the film as "the work of a confident and mature artist" (Allen).
