Lionel Andrés Messi (Rosario, Argentina, 24 giugno 1987) è un calciatore argentino che ha giocato come attaccante nell FC Barcellona e nella Nazionale argentina.
Seconda punta e all'occorrenza trequartista molto agile, mancino, è dotato di un'ottima accelerazione. Tanto nel suo club quanto in Nazionale viene impiegato come ala (sia destra che sinistra), posizione in cui sa essere micidiale nell'uno contro uno e arriva spesso in porta per concludere a rete. È stato inoltre definito dallo stesso Diego Armando Maradona il suo erede.

Carriera
Ha cominciato a giocare a 5 anni nel Grandoli, all'età di sette anni Lionel Messi indossa la maglia dei Newell's Old Boy e gioca nelle categorie giovanili. Nel 2000 emigrò in Spagna dopo aver ottenuto un contratto con il Barcellona. Il suo trasferimento nel club spagnolo nacque dalla necessità di Messi di curare una forma di nanismo da cui era afflitto, che lo spinse a trasferirsi in Spagna per trovare una cura adatta. Il Barcellona si offrì di pagarne le cure mediche e grazie a questo riuscì a mettere il giocatore sotto contratto.
La sua ribalta internazionale risale all'estate 2005, quando, segnando 6 gol in 7 partite, ha contribuito alla vittoria della sua nazionale al Mondiale di Calcio Under 20, venendo eletto miglior giocatore del torneo (Adidas Gold Ball) e ottenendo il titolo di capocannoniere (Adidas Golden Shoe).Mentre contro l'Albacete segna il suo primo gol nella Liga.
Proprio nel Barcellona gioca titolare assieme a Ronaldinho e al camerunense Samuel Eto'o. Purtroppo ha dovuto saltare la finale di Champions League contro l'Arsenal a causa di un infortunio rimediato contro il Chelsea. Al Mondiale di Germania 2006 con la maglia dell'Argentina ha contribuito al 6-0 contro la Serbia & Montenegro. Nel campionato successivo riesce nella grande impresa di segnare una tripletta al Real Madrid.
Ha vinto due volte la Liga (2005 e 2006), due volte la Supercoppa Spagnola (2005 e 2006) ed una volta la Champions League (2006).
Il suo soprannome è El Pulga (La Pulce), per via della sua statura piuttosto ridotta.
Dal mese di febbraio è protagonista, come altri sportivi, di uno spot pubblicitario dell'Adidas.
I gol alla Maradona
Il 18 aprile 2007 Messi ha segnato due gol nella semifinale della Coppa del Re contro il Getafe Club de Fútbol, uno dei quali assomiglia molto al famoso Gol del Secolo di Maradona contro l'Inghilterra al Mondiali di calcio Messico 1986 ed è già considerato come il maggior contendente per il miglior goal dell'anno. Lo stesso Messi ha detto che la rete era simile a quella segnata da Maradona, ma dice anche che non potrà mai essere paragonato al più forte giocatore di tutti i tempi. Deco, durante un'intervista, riferisce che il goal di Messi è il più bello che abbia mai visto in vita sua.
Il 9 giugno 2007, nella penultima giornata di campionato contro i rivali cittadini dell'Espanyol, Messi ha messo a segno un gol molto simile all'altra rete segnata da Maradona nella stessa partita, la celebre mano de Dios. La rete, come quella del Pibe de oro, è stata convalidata tra le proteste degli avversari, il che ha suscitato molte polemiche nei confronti del direttore di gara e del calciatore, accusato di antisportività. Alla domanda se avesse toccato il pallone con la mano, Messi ha dichiarato che «non importa come abbia segnato il gol». Ha aggiunto che «è stato un gol come un altro» e che «sono giocate che in una partita possono arrivare. È stato un gol come altri, quindi da festeggiare con allegria».
Nel 2021 si unisce al Paris Saint Germain per una nuova avventura.
